Sometimes completing a task on time becomes too daunting to perform – be it homework or finishing a project. We are reluctant to do such activities that we think might not hold a significant priority. We delay it as much as possible.
Procrastination is a common habit amongst even high achieving individuals. Etymologically, “procrastination” is derived from the Latin verb procrastinare, which means to put off until tomorrow. But it’s more than just voluntarily delaying.
Our brain tends to prioritize necessities and delay certain activities; either because of lack of motivation or laziness. Few other major reasons that become a cause for procrastination are:
We most likely prefer to attain an effortless lifestyle. The kind of life we live is because we are bound under such circumstances – be it a social pressure or work. We typically don’t find it amusing to put our extra effort in something that’s either hard to gain or lacks in motivation regardless how profound benefits it holds.
Fear of Failure
When you want to achieve something extraordinary in life, you take it as a serious ambition. The more you think about its pieces, the more your brain starts to make excuses. You want to plan big for yourself or for future. But, your brain comes in a way as a major hindrance. Before even giving it an actual start, it’ll let you count all the possible negative elements. It is a good practice to understand practical aspects, but at the same time it weakens your determination.
Lack of Energy and Priority
We are ceaselessly bombarded with the keys to living a great life. Do this, do that, be competitive, set goals, work tirelessly, push yourself hard, so on and so forth. This whole exercise for achieving the best in life consumes us. It takes a large part of our energy to achieve a big goal.
Anxiety Or Depression
Life burdens us in the shackles of responsibilities, worries, fears and hurdles. But we don’t realize our inner strengths. We are all so captivated with insecurities and restlessness that we never dare to go beyond. This could instigate the root of anxiety and depression. Due to the fear of loss, failure, stress or burden, we procrastinate to a level where we want to get rid of them completely.
For many individuals, procrastination is a strong force that keeps them from completing the most crucial and significant chores. It’s also a possibly risky force, causing sufferers to drop out of school, perform poorly at work, give up on that big dream, etc.
There are certainly more reasons why people engage themselves in procrastination. It strongly affects their personality, their self-control and enthusiasm for ambitions. Procrastination is not merely about time management and setting goals – it is a mindset.
